2023 K-12 NASHVILLE CITY CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS KICK OFF!

2023 NASHVILLE K-12 CITY CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES REPORT:

  • Lipscomb Academy Qualifier #1 – September 17th
  • National Chess Day – Chess in the Park Qualifier #2 – October 8th
  • Next Up – Ensworth Qualifier #3 – November 19th

We had 114 K-12 students competing across 6-sections at our first qualifying event at Lipscomb Academy’s magnificent, lower school campus.

In the K-1, K-3, K-5, K-8, K-12 sections, the Top-2 Finishers in each advance to the 2023 Nashville City Championship in January at the Nashville Chess Center.

Competitors play 5-Rounds regardless of their results – you can win all 5 and stay in or lose all 5 and stay in! A win is worth 1.0, a draw is worth 0.5 and a loss is a 0. At the end of the event, whoever has the most points finishes the highest. Of course, if you win the first game, you will then play another player that also won the first game. If you win the first two games, you play another player that won the first two games. This is called a “Swiss System” and it is designed to create a clear winner.

Each school that has at least two players in their respective section also qualifies as a team (although the Top-4 scores make a complete team).

Meigs Magnet School was the big winner at the Lipscomb event!

Meigs Magnet School walked away with the 1st Place Team Trophy in three of the six sections!

On the Meigs Unrated Team, COLIN KEE, LIAM GRIDER, AIDEN JACOBY and BON ENGLAND brought home the gold. GRAYDON MCMURTRAY took home first place individually with a perfect 5-0 score!

The Meigs Magnet School 5th Graders also brought home 1st place! ETHAN TANG led the squad with 4.5 points, which also earned him a trip to the 2023 City Championship in 2nd Place. His team members KYAN WASHINGTON, ALEXANDER OSIN and MJ COBB secured the team trophy.

The section was won by ATHIYAN SENTHIL KUMAR of Bethesda Elementary, who also earns a trip to the City in 2023 with his 4.5 points.

Creekside Elementary was the 2nd place team with Scales Elementary school taking 3rd.

The Meigs Magnet School JR High Team finished the 1st Place Trophy hat trick with team members LEV LITVAK, MALENA WASHINGTON, DEV RAMAN AND OTIS OSTROWSKI working well together.

The K-8 Section qualifiers were SABRINA HOJA of Central Magnet School and OJAS PILAY of Grassland Middle School tying with 4.5 points each.

Harpeth Hall finished 2nd in the team standings (lots chess girls rockin’ it in this group!) and University School of Nashville taking 3rd.

The aforementioned Sabrina and Malena also qualify for the All-Girls City Championship in 2023. (A full list of qualifiers is attached at the end of this report).

In the K-12 High School Section, Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet School took home 1st Place with Central Magnet School winning 2nd. HEMI RAMBHA of Ravenwood and TARON POLBORN of MLK qualified for the City Championship in 1st and 2nd Place Individually.

In our cutest section, the K-1 Kids fought hard, but only one team showed up! University School of Nashville took the trophy on default! STEVEN YAN turned in a perfect score to qualify for the City Championship and BRANDON LAU of Percy Priest qualified in 2nd Place. CALEB MAGNER help USN bring home the team trophy.

Last but not least, the K-3 Primary Section was hard fought and SAEED HOJA made sure his sister was not the only family member bringing home a 1st Place trophy! His perfect 5-0 stamped his ticket to the City with AARAV GHOGH of Trinity Elementary qualifying in 2nd Place.

The Harding Academy Team of OLIVIA ABTAHI, GIDEON JOHNSON AND BENJAMIN RYE GOWDY claimed the Team Title with St. Paul Christian Academy bringing home second place. Their crew of JEFFERSON FEREE, JACK VEITH AND SARAH LANG WISEMAN were just a half point out of first!

Those who were eager to qualify at Lipscomb, but missed out did not have to wait long for the next opportunity!

The Nashville Chess Center hosted its first ever outdoor chess festival event on Saturday, October 8th in Centennial Park for National Chess Day. It was a huge success and all participants were treated to lunch, snow cones and many more treats on a perfect, sunny Fall Day.

This time it was the Ensworth Chess Teams that led the charge!

Ensworth brought home the first place team trophy in the K-1 and K-3 Section, with a 3rd Place finish in the K-5!

In the K-1 Section, it was STEVEN YAN with back-to-back victories! You can only qualify once though, so in 2nd Place PETER WISEMAN of St. Paul Christian Academy qualified alongside SAHIL PATEL of Ensworth.

In the K-3 Group, there was a 4-way tie for first place! In this scenario, your tie-breakers are the scores of your top 5/6 opponents – so it is really not in your hands. You just want “your horses” to run well after they play you.

AARAV GHOSH took first place, but having previously qualified, the City spots went to KRESHAV KRITHIK and JIMMY MCHUGH. SPARSH SHAH also tied for first, but finished 4th overall.

The Champion Ensworth team members were LEE LEVINE, ISABELLA TALBOTT and GUY RYERSON.

St. Paul Christian Academy finished in 2nd place with their same three consistent team members from Lipscomb and Kings Academy took home 3rd place with their two-man squad of WYNTON CHERRY and KESS AVERY.

In the K-5 Section, Creekside Elementary flipped the script this time taking first place and leaving Meigs Magnet in 2nd! Their team members were ABHIRUP REDDY CHADA, SHYAM VENKATESH, PRIYASHU KOLHE AND SRI DHEERAJ INAMPUDI.

Meigs Magnet only saw two members competing this time, however KYAN WASHINGTON was able to qualify for the City with 5.5 out of 6, just edging JONATHAN RAWLS of Scales on tie-breaks, but both players advance in this tie for first place.

The 3rd Place Ensworth team consisted of KIP KEYSER, JACK TALBOTT AND DOMINIC BACHMANN.

In the K-8 Section, Page Middle School members NIKHIL VELLALACHRVU and AARAV BATRA brought home first place over Meigs Magnet School. Congratulations to 2023 City Qualifiers GNANI RAMBHA (taking first with 5.5) and MATTHEW GOLANN of USN (taking clear 2nd with 5.0).

University School of Nashville team members STEWART HALL and EVAN HAUSER brought home the first place team trophy, as the only team. Hey, you gotta just show up sometimes! Qualifying for City were BEAU SENSING AND RONIT CHANDRA – both with 5/6.

In the massive Challengers Section, we saw a new chess team emerge victorious! Hawkins Middle School in Hendersonville team members KAMERON WARRICK, COOPER GILLINGHAM, SCARLETT SWENSON, JAYDEN SEALS, ANGEL WROBLEWSKY and KINSLEY MANGRUM made sure the 1st Place team trophy was going back to Sumner County!

Congrats to SETH MUELLER, MASON ADAMS, JOHN CYPRA AND SPARSH WAGHMERE for all tying for first place, but finishing 1st – 4th respectively.

Nashville Collegiate Prep brought home the 2nd place team award with University School of Nashville earning 3rd.

In addition to our overall city qualifiers, the following female chess players earned their spots in the All-Girls City Championship:  TILLY CHERRY, MILA MUNCHOOR, DRUTHI PERIVILLI, INARA MUNCHOOR, GEORGIA CAMPBELL, ESTHER CHERRY, SABRINA HOJA, MALENA WASHINGTON, ANDREA MARTINEZ GUITIERREZ, OLIVIA ABTAHI, ELOISE ANDREWS, SOFIA MUNCHOOR, CAMILA MARTINEZ GUTIERREZ, and AADHYA GATTU!

We look forward to an exciting event on November 19th to round out the field for the 2023 Nashville K-12 City Championship!
