WHY THIS EVENT? WHY NOW?

Our Middle-Tennessee chess students have been working hard for two years now with very few opportunities to compete over the board with their peers. This event fills that needs as students can play up to 8 rated games per month now (Quads impact "regular/standard" ratings plus quick - Quick Rated event only impacts "quick" rating).

We will broadcast the Top-5 Boards Live online from our brand new, premier chess playing hall - Coach Sherri's Chess Loft.

Students will also receive a weekly lesson before the start of each event. The NCC will provide water and some healthy snacks for students as well.

All of this for about the cost of hiring a baby sitter for a few hours.

Students may play in one event or they can play in all eight! You can register for all 8 events now and receive a $50 discount (NCC members only).

FAQ:

What is a "Quad?"

A Quad is a Round Robin tournament format - where you play the three players closest in rating to you. For example, if we have 8 participants - then participants 1-4 will all play together in one group and participants 5-8 will all play together in their own separate group.

What is a "Quick Swiss?"

All 32-students are in one big group. They all play together 5-rounds (you never get eliminated in any of these events) and when you win, you play someone else that wins, when you lose, you play someone else that loses and that pattern repeats round after round until there is a clear winner.

Do Parents have to stay during this event?

While parents are always welcome to stay at any of our events, it is not required. Think of these 8-events as sort of half-day, mini camps.

When is drop off?

We will start the lesson shortly after 1 PM. We will open doors at 12:45 PM.

When is dismissal?

4:30 PM.

Do I sign my student in?

Yes, please sign them in and then when they depart, sign them out.

What kind of snacks do you serve?

Typically a variety of fruit (strawberries, bananas, clementines, etc). Sometimes we give students fruit popsicles as well. Please let us know if your child has any allergies we need to be aware of.

Who will be the coaches/tournament directors?

Primarily Coach Todd and Coach Tiffany. We also have some reliable high school volunteers from time-to-time to assist, but they will not ever be in charge alone. Coach Prosser and Coach Ron also help us frequently. All of our NCC Chess Coaches/Tournament Directors are experienced and back ground checked. We do not request their health records or reveal any health records ever though.

Are there are Covid Protocols in place?

No, there are not any covid protocols in place other than common sense health conditions. If your child is sick, please do not bring them to the events. We encourage all students to wash their hands before they have a snack and after eating, using the restroom. We do have sanitizer around the club, but we do not provide any other PPE.

What is the Grand Prix aspect of this event?

Students will collectively earn points towards their 8-week Grand Prix score. We will take the Top-7 performances, this way a student can miss a week or have an off week and it will not hurt their chances. Of course, students that play in more of the events have better chances in the long run and they get more practice making them more experienced and stronger players.

Scoring: You get 1 point for each win. You get 0.5 for each draw.

Bonus Scoring: You get 5 points for winning a Quad. You get 5 points for winning a quick swiss. You get 3 bonus points for 2nd place in the quick, you get 2 bonus points for 3rd place in the quick and 1 bonus point for 4th place in the quick. If there are ties, we simply add the bonus points to gather and average them.

What are the prizes?

There are weekly awards and series long awards as mentioned in the flyer.
